Biography

Denise Ham, GTCL, LTCL, ARCM, HonARAM “one of Europe’s most sought-after conducting teachers” (European String teachers Magazine) is much in demand as a director of courses and workshops.

 

She studied piano and cello at Trinity College of Music and conducting with George Hurst. From 1986-2009 she was Tutor in Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music and is currently Head of Conducting Studies at Blackheath Conservatoire, London as well as being on the staff at the internationally renowned Conductors’ Course at Canford Summer School of Music.

 

She has trained and conducted orchestras in the UK and Europe and held principal conductorships with the Worcestershire Symphony Orchestra, the Birmingham Conservatoire Junior School Symphony Orchestra, the Cheltenham Chamber Orchestra and the Aberdeenshire Youth Orchestra. She was awarded the Citation for Music and the Joyner Cup for the most outstanding award-winner across the arts by the Cheltenham Arts Council.

 

From 1987-2007 she was an Examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

 

After numerous requests from conducting students at Canford Summer School and elsewhere Denise made the instructional DVD
"The Craft of Conducting"  which has sold throughout Europe and the United States as well as in Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, Slovenia and Iceland. Many conductors who have bought it testify to its effectiveness as an invaluable aid to their work and study.
