Denise Ham is sought by serious students of conducting
the world over, many of them as a result of seeing her
unique instructional DVD, “The Craft of Conducting”.
Her perceptive teaching, based on the principles of the
Toscanini/Barzin method, is renowned for giving her
students a clear, expressive baton technique combined
with integrated, relaxed body movement. It is applicable
not only to orchestras but also to choirs and bands and
to amateur and professional ensembles alike.
She has been likened to a good doctor in helping
conductors solve the individual technical and musical
problems they face. The foundation of her teaching, as
with her performance, is the music. To convey the
composer’s intention with understanding, clarity and
